Solutions to improve power quality

The company

Electronic and electromechanical equipment manufacturer

Since 1947IREM has been producing a wide range of equipment that improves the quality of the power supply used by professional users susceptible to voltage anomalies in distribution networks. In fact, all electrical equipment, in order to work properly, requires a power supply with characteristics that comply with those specified by their manufacturer. When this condition is not met, faults, errors and premature ageing occur. To avoid this, devices with different levels of effectiveness are available. The choice must be made by assessing the degree of protection to be guaranteed, theentity of the faults to be corrected and the direct and indirect costs that these may cause.

SINGLE-PHASE AND THREE-PHASE INDUSTRIAL VOLTAGE STABILISERS

Ministab and Sterostab, industrial voltage stabilisers

We supply Voltage Stabilisers in Italy for industrial users who need to use electricity networks with voltage disturbances. These solutions are widely used for the construction of industrial plants in developing countries where the electrical grid has a lower quality.

Line faults, atmospheric phenomena, continuous load variations and disturbances generated by the users themselves make it impossible to guarantee each user a constant voltage that falls within the tolerance margin stipulated in the supply contracts.

Often, this tolerance is insufficient for the most susceptible consumers. Other times, the mains voltage reaches levels that are 15, 20 or even 30% higher than the nominal value.

Voltage fluctuations are particularly treacherous disturbances because they are not obvious, but can only be detected using specific instruments. In the presence of voltage fluctuations, electrical consumers appear to maintain a state of correct operation, but this masks serious, sometimes irreparable disturbances.

Technology and operation
Technology and operation

Ministab and Sterostab control via a series transformer. An electronic control circuit detects the output voltage and compares it with a sample voltage. If the difference between the output voltage and the sample voltage exceeds the specified tolerance limits, an error signal is generated, either negative or positive, depending on whether the output voltage is lower or higher than the set value. This signal controls the servomotor that moves the mobile contacts (electrographic rollers/brushes) of the variable autotransformer, changing the transformation ratio in order to supply the primary winding of the series transformer with the necessary additive or subtractive voltage to bring the value within the set limits. The stabilisation of the output voltage is carried out on the effective value (RMS) and consequently it is not influenced by possible harmonic distortions present on the supply line. This regulation system has the advantage of not having moving contacts in series with the power supply line.

Versions
The three-phase ranges are available in two versions:
  • i T models The T3 models stabilise the average of the three phases and are therefore suitable for balanced networks and for a maximum load imbalance between phases of 50%. The T3 models have only one stabilisation circuit that simultaneously regulates the three phases and are therefore considerably less expensive. They can also be connected to lines without neutral.

  • Y models are equipped with an independent stabilisation circuit for each phase and are therefore suitable for unbalanced networks and loads with an unbalance between phases of up to 100%. The neutral connection is essential for the operation of Y3 stabilisers. The input line must therefore have 4 wires (3 phases + neutral).
Stabilisers do not transform the voltage and provide the same nominal value as the input voltage at the output. If different nominal voltages are required between input and output, an isolating transformer or auto transformer must be added. Ministab and Sterostab operate correctly with both 50 and 60 Hz networks.
Degrees of protection

Ministab and Sterostab can have different degrees of protection:

IP21: degree of protection suitable for equipment installed indoors and in rooms free of dust and spray; IP54 INDOORThis ensures that the stabiliser is protected against dust and splashes, and is therefore suitable for use in dusty and even hot rooms, but not suitable for outdoor installation; IP54 OUTDOOR: suitable for outdoor installation as it ensures that the stabiliser is protected against dust, spray and sunlight.

NETWORK CONDITIONERS: MINISTATIC AND STEROGUARD

They are designed to provide the highest level of protection to electrical consumers connected to lines where voltage surges, high frequency conducted disturbances and voltage peaks are present. These phenomena statistically account for more than 95% of electrical faults, i.e. sources of failure and inefficiency for any type of consumer connected to distribution networks. The series models group together four different devices in a single device, each of which is dedicated to the compensation or mitigation of a specific electrical fault:

  • a voltage surge suppressor,
  • a mains filter,
  • a high attenuation isolation transformer,
  • a voltage regulator.

The range consists of models with power ratings ranging from 0.5 to 930 kVA, using two different voltage regulation technologies:
a) static switching technology for loads with absorption up to 4 kVA single-phase and 24 kVA three-phase: MINISTATIC;
b) electrodynamic regulation technology using a series transformer and variable autotransformer for loads with absorption up to 950 kVA three-phase: STEROGUARD. The two control technologies and the breadth of the range make it possible to provide the most suitable control system to meet the specific requirements of the various types of consumers to be supplied.

They have specific performance for supplying electronic equipment of medium-low power that requires a particularly high stabilisation speed such as: process controls, numerical controls, robots, electro-medical equipment, telecommunications equipment, computers.

The range consists of standard models with power ratings from 0.5 to 24 kVA. Furthermore, since the construction criteria make the conditioners very versatile, versions with "tailor-made" characteristics can be designed for the most varied applications on request.

TS single-phase series

The range consists of single-phase models with power ratings from 500 VA to 4 kVA. Their quiet operation, small size and ease of use and installation make them suitable for use in offices, studios and laboratories, as well as in professional applications in the automotive, chemical, food and telecommunications industries.

STEROGUARD electrodynamic air conditioners

STEROGUARD electrodynamic air conditioners

STEROGUARD Irem electrodynamic conditioners

They provide the highest level of protection for high-power users with high electromagnetic susceptibility, connected to networks disturbed by voltage fluctuations, high-frequency conducted noise and voltage peaks.

The control system consists exclusively of magnetic components capable of withstanding loads with high inrush currents. The use of electronic components is limited to the control of the mains and the magnetic components that stabilise the voltage. Thanks to these characteristics, electromechanical mains conditioners are characterised by high electromagnetic immunity and absolute reliability. They are therefore particularly suitable for powering radio and television transmitters, telephone systems, radar systems, motors, compressors, pumps, electro-medical equipment, machine tools, etc.

The simplicity of construction means that any technical work can be carried out even by technicians with basic knowledge of electrical installations.

Electrical voltage faults on industrial installations.

Voltage variation

Being subject to continuous load variations, distribution lines cannot guarantee a constant voltage. Therefore, electrical equipment usually operates with tolerances of at least it +/- 5% from the nominal value. In fact, electricity producers "contractually" expect a variation of +/-10%. However, this limit is often exceeded due to "slow variations" (voltage drops caused by undersized lines and overloads), "overvoltages" (sharp rises in the rms value of the line voltage that occur when industries are not absorbing power), and "rapid variations" (drops caused, for example, by the insertion of consumers such as: discharge lamps, pointers, large electric motors, etc.).

Voltage peaks

These are impulsive disturbances of very short duration, dangerous for the most susceptible users because they reach voltage values of thousands of volts. They are caused not only by commutations on high-voltage lines, insertion of power factor correction capacitors, lightning strikes, and disconnection of loads with high reactive power, but also by loads of limited power such as photocopiers and air conditioners connected to the same line that supplies the susceptible consumers. Because of their short duration, they are not detectable with a normal voltmeter; they are one of the main causes of faults and inefficiencies.

High frequency disorders

They are very frequent and easily detected by anyone watching television. They are the cause of the snow effect and the annoying scratches that sometimes appear on the screen. They are caused by sparks generated in electric motors, by the 'corona effect' on high-voltage lines, by the 'starter' of illuminated signs and burners, and by the magnetic fields radiated by radio and television broadcasters. Line noise, also known as HF NOISE, does not cause problems for electromechanical equipment, but is often harmful to electronic equipment.

Harmonic distortions

They are caused by the increasing use of electrical equipment with non-linear absorption such as rectifiers, variable speed drives, switching power supplies. This defect causes: overloads on lines and transformers, burst capacitors, erroneous signals from measuring instruments and in general the malfunctioning of any electrical equipment.

Solution

To solve these problems related to the quality of the electrical supply, upstream equipment is needed. We can advise you on the right equipment according to the power requirements of your industrial/laboratory/office plant and the anomalies found on your network.
